Specialized Health Protocols
The Indio Gigante has specific weaknesses due to its extreme phenotype.
Leg & Foot Inspection (Weekly)
Scaly Leg Mites: Because they have so much exposed leg surface area, they are mite magnets.
Prophylactic: Coat legs in VetRx or petroleum jelly once a month as a barrier.
Crooked Toes: Check chicks daily. If toes curl inward, use "chick shoes" (tape splints) immediately. This is often caused by slick floors in the brooder—use paper towels or grippy shelf liner, never newspaper.
The Wry Tail/Neck Check
Genetics play a huge role here. Watch for "Wry Tail" (tail held permanently to one side). This is a genetic fault often linked to spinal issues. While these birds can live happy lives, do not breed them.
Comb & Wattle Care
These birds have massive surface area on their faces. In winter, they are high-risk for frostbite.
Tip: If temps drop below 20°F (-6°C), consider a flat panel heater (safe radiant heat) or aggressive application of Musher's Secret wax on combs.
