Temperament & Handling
Indios are known as "gentle giants," but their size requires respect.
Handling Mechanics:
Never pick them up by the legs (dislocation risk).
The "Football Carry": Slide your dominant hand under the breast bone, tuck the bird's head under your armpit (gently), and secure the legs between your fingers. This stops them from thrashing their massive wings.
Inter-flock Dynamics:
Indios are often slow-moving. Do not house them with aggressive, flighty breeds (like Rhode Island Reds or Leghorns) who may bully them or out-compete them for food. They do best with other calm breeds (Brahmas, Cochins, Orpingtons).
