Hatch Success Tips

Shipped eggs need a little extra care on arrival. Follow these steps to give your Índio Gigante eggs the best possible start.

  1. Rest your eggs — When your eggs arrive, let them rest big-end-up in an open carton at room temperature for 12–24 hours before setting them. This lets the air cell settle back into place after shipping.
  2. Don't wash them — Hatching eggs have a natural protective coating called the bloom that seals out bacteria. Never wash your eggs.
  3. Set up your incubator early — Get your incubator running at least 24 hours before your eggs go in, so temperature and humidity stabilize. A fan, an automatic egg turner, and a digital temperature/humidity display will improve your hatch rate.
  4. Temperature: 99.5°F — Hold 99.5°F throughout the entire incubation period.
  5. Humidity — Keep 45–50% for the first 18 days, then raise to 65–70% for the final 3 days (lockdown).
  6. Inspect on arrival — Unwrap eggs gently and check for cracks. Candling reveals hairline cracks you can't see with the naked eye — don't set cracked eggs. If air cells arrived damaged, incubate the eggs upright and skip turning for the first 7 days, then tip them gently side to side.
  7. Damaged eggs? Tell us — If any eggs arrive damaged, take photos of the eggs and the packaging and call or text us at (904) 290-3392.
